Some Questions and Answers about Refuges

HOW CAN I GET INTO A REFUGE?
You can refer yourself by ringing the Manchester Domestic Violence Helpline on: 0161 839 8574, or another agency can refer you, such as the police, Social Services or Housing Offices.

WHAT WILL THE REFUGE BE LIKE?
The Refuge is your home for the time you live there and you will have your own room. You won't be judged, and the service is confidential.

WHAT ABOUT MY CHILDREN?
Our Refuge has a Children's Room and a Children's Worker. There will be activities for children, help with school places and any support your children may need.

WHAT SUPPORT WILL I GET?
You will be offered advice on things like benefits and rehousing; also counselling and practical support and an Aftercare Service when you move out.

WHAT ABOUT MY HOUSING?
You can stay at the Refuge until you are rehoused by the City Council and your furniture will be stored free of charge until you move on.

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO GO INTO A REFUGE?
Refuges have Outreach Workers who can offer you support and practical help to you and your children in your own home, if you prefer to stay there. To contact the Outreach worker in your area, you can ring the Manchester Women's Domestic Violence Helpline on: 0161 839 8574
